REVIEW:
BORDERLAND
(AFTER DARK
HORROR FEST)

03/16/08

“Borderland” is the 4th
installment of the “Eight Films to Die For” that I had the
privilege of reviewing, and I have to say except for “The
Deaths of Ian Stone” this was one of the best ones. I was
beginning to lose my faith in the Horrorfest, but this film
along with the aforementioned, was what this Horrerfest was
supposed to be about. This film had real grind your teeth,
have to look away, horror. Add to that the fact that it’s
based on real events and you know you're about to watch
something chilling.
The film “Borderland” is based on real events about rituals
involving human sacrifice practiced by cults near the U.S -
Mexican border. Three friend head over the border for a
night of partying and debauchery. They were looking for a
night of alcohol, strip joints, and hookers but when one of
their friends go missing, they know that they got more than
they bargained for. As they begin to search for their
missing friend they star to uncover a horrible secret of an
underground cult that even the Mexican police can’t protect
them from. They decide to go after their friend but the
closer they get , and the more people they involve, the more
people turn up dead and they began to realize that the got
themselves into something from which there is no escape.
This film is in the same vein as “Hostel” and “Turistas”. It
has the same general feel of being trapped in a strange
country where our laws can no longer offer us protection and
where we as Americans are despised and targeted. This film
also give you a peek into “Santeria” which is a form of
religion mixed with witchcraft which is practiced in some
countries such as Mexico. The film had a steady pace, it had
tons of suspense, which is crucial, and it included some
very gruesome scenes which were hard to watch at times, but
the fact that it make you cringe with horror is what makes
it such a remarkable film in its genre. This one is
definitely worth watching.
