REVIEW: CONSPIRACY

03/22/08

Talk about squandering an
opportunity. Director Adam Marcus received an 8 million
dollar budget and a former A-list actor and he still
couldn’t make a half decent film. That former A-list actor
is Val Kilmer, and if you’ve seen Tombstone or The Doors or
the more recent Kiss Kiss Bang Bang you know Val might still
has a chance to regain his A-list status. However, the movie
Conspiracy written and directed by Adam Marcus will not be
the movie to take him there.
Macpherson (Val Kilmer) is a veteran of the Iraq war whose
last day of war left him with a major injury and violent
flashbacks. Miguel Silva (Greg Serano) is the man that saved
his life and asks Macpherson to join him in New Mexico to
work on a ranch. Feeling lost, Macpherson decides to join
his friend, but when he finally arrives Miguel is nowhere to
be found and everyone in town acts very mysteriously. That
is until Rhodes (Gary Cole), the CEO of Halicorp, a major
military weapons development company, meets with Macpherson
at the town’s restaurant. Rhodes explains that he is
building his version of the perfect sociality and asks
Macpherson to join him. After Macpherson refuses he is left
for dead, but survives and take his revenge with the help of
Rhodes girlfriend Joanna (Jennifer Esposito).
Conspiracy offers the same old thing we’ve seen before.
There is nothing new to see here. But worst of all, for an
action movie, the action sequences are bad. There isn’t any
point in the movie that you feel any excitement or even care
if Macpherson gets his revenge by doing in Rhodes. The whole
thing with the mystery or shell I say conspiracy is paper
thin.
Val Kilmer gives a less than stellar performance which was
hard for me to believe that such a talented actor could
sleep walk his way through an entire movie. Gary Cole and
Jennifer Esposito’s performances are no better than Val’s
and it makes me wonder if this is the director’s fault.
The similarity to Halicorp and real live company Halliburton
are explored but not in-depth and just becomes a political
gimmick. Overall I can’t recommend this movie even for
die-hard Kilmer fans like myself.
