REVIEW: INSIDE

There are moments in an
adult person’s life, specially women, that will forever be
remembered. One of those moments is pregnancy, and they are
more touching if it is their primogenital child. The
beginning of a new life is always exciting, heart touching,
and specially difficult to any parents, this has been theme
of many dramatic, comical, and familiar movies. Although
often the pregnant character is used in some horror movies
rarely the movie revolves around it. Inside uses this
concept and does it wonderful, it is one of those movies
that will hook the audience from the beginning and shock
them in any scene.
The movie takes place in France and opens with a great
scene, a terrible and bloody car accident, where only a
pregnant lady named Sarah survives. Then, it fast forwards
four months, where she is a day before giving birth,
unfortunately, since she had the accident where she lost her
husband, she is not as excited as an expecting mother should
be. Not even the fact that it is Christmas eve, her last day
of pregnancy, and that her family wants to spend time with
her seems to sheer her up; She just wants to be alone in her
house and dwell in her past. Everything seems to go well
until an stranger knocks at her door requesting for a simple
favor, which of course Sarah refused to help. Little does
Sarah knows is that the stranger knows her very well and has
the intention to take Sarah’s most valuable possession at
any cause: her baby. What seems as a peaceful and silent
night becomes a dreadful, intense, and bloody nightmare,
where the only objective is Sarah and her baby’s survival.
Along the way she will discover the killer’s purpose and
most important her maternal instinct.
Director and writer Alexandre Bustillo along with Julien
Maury did an outstanding job producing this movie. The
concept, the plot, the setting, and the script although kept
simple is enough to entertain and disturb the audience to
the fullest. There is nothing more disturbing than seeing a
pregnant woman getting stab and faced a psychopath killer
while she runs for her life for about one hour and 20
minutes. The intensity gets so high that the audience can
not avoid to feel the same desperation, pain and panic as
Sarah does. Visually the movie is shocking, which is a good
thing for this kind of movies, there is blood all around and
some scenes are just brutal, sick, and surprising, like the
death of Sarah’s best friend Jean Pierre and Sarah’s mother.
The setting of the movie is the most terrifying aspect of
the movie, and it was well worked by the director. Since the
whole movie takes place in a regular house, to regular
people, using everyday items there is a feeling of fear that
can not be helped by the audience, personally I went to
check my door twice before I went to sleep after watching
this movie. The special effects team did a great job since
everything keeps a level of realism making the audience to
get more into the movie. The character are well designed and
splendidly performed by each actor, specially Alysson
Paradis’ performance which is real, charming, and
convincing. The only setback I found to the movie is the
killer’s motive: it is too predictable, nonetheless the
ending is satisfactory enough for this kind of movies.
With a compelling story, great performance and outstanding
and gory special effects the movie is a great choice for
fans of the genre, and even the movie is relatively short
the audience will finish exhausted and pleased once it is
over. Alexandre Bustillo did a great job by showing a
refreshing and original horror movie by showing us that
simplicity works as fine as those elaborate movies. The
movie is one of those movies that once seen is not easily
forgotten. I recommended this movie to fans of the horror
and extreme genre. Inside is one of the most electrifying,
shocking and disturbing movies I have seen since the first
Hostel.

SPECIAL FEATURES:
The DVD is Disturbing from the moment you first see it, it
will catch your attention, marketing did a great job in
that, just by seeing it, you can tell that blood and gore
will not be scarce. Lamentably, the special features are not
as special as the movie, as matter of fact it only comes
with the standard making of feature. Personally, I think the
movie by itself is good enough to get this DVD
An In-Depth Look at the Making Of Inside: when
they said In Depth it means in depth. it is the basically an
extensive making of feature, where director, actors,
writers, producers, special effects specialist, and
musicians discussed their different impressions and
experiences of the movie (51:56)
