Nomad The Warrior
07/26/07

With the pretension of creating a historical
film of epic proportions directors Sergei Bodrov (Mongol)
and Ivan Passer (Cutter's Way) bring us "Nomad The Warrior".
A film based on some of the history of Kazakhstan in the early
1800's. "Nomad The Warrior" was Kazakhstan’s official entry
for best foreign language film in the 79th Academy Awards®.
It was also nominated for the 2007 Golden Globes for
best original score. Overall the budget for the film
was speculated to be around forty million dollars.
"Nomad The Warrior" begins
when in the divided country of Kazakhstan. Oraz (Jason Scott
Lee) a warrior master saved baby Mansur from being killed by
the Kungar invaders. Oraz raised the baby as his own son. As
he was growing up Mansur (Kuno Becker) becomes best friends
with Erali (Jay Hernandez). Together they become the best
warriors in all Kazakhstan, but only Mansur
becomes the warrior king that unites and saves his country
from savage invaders.
Being a foreign language movie
so highly nominated, I felt disappointed at the lack of
substantial support for such recognition. This is where the
movie fails. First, the acting by Kuno Becker and Jay
Hernandez provided a less than average performance. Perhaps
the script is guilty of this performance, or maybe the
directors Sergei Bodrov and Ivan Passer
didn't know how to get the best out of these two young
actors. Second, the spoken language changes from scene to
scene. For example, in some scenes the actors speak
Kazakh and in others the actors speak English which for me
was very distracting and unnecessary.
Lastly, I have to admit that no everything
was bad in this film . The battle scenes were
respectable and can compete with any Hollywood film. In the
same manner, the chosen settings were beautiful landscapes
and the customs were impeccable. Overall
"Nomad The Warrior" brings an important historical event to
life lacking some important of aspects of the movie
production industry.
