REVIEW: ONE MISSED CALL

04/16/08

SYNOPSIS: It happens
to one. Then another. And another. College students discover
eerie voicemail messages on their cell phones. Each call
comes from the near future. Each call has the chilling voice
of the student during his or her last moments alive. And each
call comes true. Terror is One Missed Call away in this
got-your-number shocker based on the hit Japanese thriller
Chakushin ari. Does the viral spree of calls have a single
source? Is there something that links the victims? Psych
student Beth Raymond (Shannyn Sossamon) and detective Jack
Andrews (Ed Burns) scramble for answers. And they?re working
fast. Because Beth just discovered an ominous message.
Director: Eric Valette Actors: Edward Burns, Shannyn
Sossamon, Azura Skye
REVIEW: When it comes to the recent trend of remakes
of Japanese horror films such as The Grudge, The Ring, The
Eye, and Dark Water, this one is scraping the bottom of the
barrel. Here is a perfect example of the saying, “If it
ain’t broke, don’t fix it”. They took a perfectly decent
creepy Japanese film and did what only Hollywood can do,
they turned it into complete garbage.
This film is a remake of the Japanese horror film “Chakushin
Ari", and is about teenagers who start receiving missed
calls on their cell phones after an eerie ring tone that is
not their own, and upon hearing the voicemail realize they
are listening to their own death, while the phone displays
the date and time that it will actually take place.
This is, by far, one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. The
acting was mediocre at best and that is me being kind.
Shannyn Sossamon and Edward Burns are the 2 lead characters
and have been excellent in their previous film work, but
they acted like they were performing this while
sleepwalking. This is some of the worst acting and they
really ruined what was a pretty decent film in its original
version. They really should have left well enough alone, and
I hope this will be a lesson learned, and will dissuade
future screen writers from wanting to continue remaking
Japanese Horror. That’s my advice to movie makers, now,
movie goers, my advice to you? Don’t burn the brain cells
necessary to sit through this film, you’ll need them
someday.
