REVIEW: SOUTHLAND TALES

03/17/08

SYNOPSIS: The city
stands on the edge of social, economic and environmental
disaster. SOUTHLAND TALES is an epic story set over the
course of three days that culminate in a massive 4th of July
celebration. A large ensemble cast of characters includes
Boxer Santaros (Johnson), an action star stricken with
amnesia, Krysta Now (Gellar), an adult film star developing
her own reality television project, and Roland Taverner
(Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to
a vast conspiracy.
REVIEW: "Southland
Tales" is Richard Kelly's follow up to his film Donnie Darko,
a film that is very long, confusing and disapointing. The film was released back in November 14,
2007 in only 64 theaters and produced poor numbers at
the box office. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will be
releasing the DVD on March 18, 2008.
"Southland Tales" is a story that clearly deserves to be a
series rather than a single film. In a way, this is probably
what Richard Kelly did not realized when he decided to make
this film. There is so much information thrown at the
audience through the narrative that thirty minutes into the
movie the confusion is overwhelming. It seems that Richard
Kelly wanted to make fun of a lot of society issues in
this black comedy; Homeland Security, terrorism , politics,
science, religion and sex that 2 hours and 24 minutes were
not enough.
This melting pot of ideas are not all bad. For example, Richard Kelly's futuristic
vision is fresh and interesting. Some of the ideas
presented like an alternative fuel solution and vision on how a country without privacy from
the government would be, are just some of the highlights of
the film. These innovative ideas and the cast was the only
motive to continue to watch this film until the end.

I just got this on DVD because I loved
Donnie Darko and I thought his follow up
would be other work of genius, but the
movie is more complicated than my
calculus homework. By the time the movie
was over, my head was hurting. The Rock
and Seann Scott were awesome! |
