The Darwin Awards

SYPNOSIS: Detective
Michael Burrows (Fiennes) is obsessed with “The Darwin
Awards,” which are presented to people who accidentally kill
themselves in incredibly stupid ways. So when he’s fired for
bungling an arrest, he offers his profiling services to a
life insurance company. Now, with the help of a tough claims
investigator (Ryder), he’s determined to learn how to
identify these idiots…before they die!
FILM CRICTIC:
The idea of creating a film
based on the most famous cases registered by the Darwin Awards
sounds very interesting. The dilemma arises on what would
be a good main story for this film. That was the challenge
for writer- director Finn Taylor. Unfortunately, he tried to
deliver so much comedy that the main story became absurd. It
is understandable that the film is about how people have
died making silly stunts, but making the leading character
act foolish was lack of thoughtfulness.
Aside from the main story, the
idea of making the film look like a documentary was
not a very good decision by Finn Taylor. At times the
audience doesn't know if the shot is coming from the
documentary side of the story or it is real footage of the
film .
Where Finn Taylor gets most of
his credit for this film is with cast selection and the
re-enacting of "The Darwin Awards" cases. Each case was well
directed and exceptionally executed by this fabulous cast.
