REVIEW: The Page Turner

as a musician and own views on making music, write-director
Denis Dercourt, creates a superb psychological thriller.
that keeps the audience guessing and intrigued for 85 minutes in
the movie The Page Turner.
Melanie (Deborah Francois,
LENFANT) is a butcher's daughter with high aspirations of
becoming a concert pianist. When Melanie was 10, she takes
the conservatory entrance exam. In the middle of the exam
Melanie gets distracted by the imperative behavior of the
jury's chairwoman, which is a well know concert pianist. Up
to this point director Dercourt gives the audience a good
background on Melanie's strong and defiant personality.
Because of the chairwoman's distraction, Melanie fails the
conservatory entrance exam. Disappointed and upset about the
incident which shatters her dreams, Melanie gives up on
piano.
Ten years later while working as an intern at a law firm,
Melanie meets Monsieur Fouchecourt (Pascal Greggory),
husband of Madame Founchecourt (Catherine Frot, THE DINNER
GAME). The woman that cause the distraction years back
during the Conservatory entrance exam. When Melanie finds
out that Monsieur Fouchecourt is looking for someone to take
care of their son Tristan (Antoine Martynciow), she offers
to take care of the kid. Without knowing that Melanie was
the little girl from the past, Madame Founchecourt gives
Melanie all her trust and ask her to become her page turner.
Soon Melanie sees the perfect opportunity to elaborate a
clever and cold revenge.
Deborah Francois and
Catherine Frot's performances are outstanding, giving the
film an impressive realism. The only unclear scene in the
film is the fact that we don't know for sure if Melanie
takes the internship at the law firm knowing that Monsieur
Fouchecourt works there or it was a coincidence. Besides
this, The Page Turner is the kind of revenge film that will
keep audiences in suspense for the most part of the film and
talking about it after its unexpected ending.
